Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14: Leaker picks out seven questionable areas where Samsung's phone offers more for US$799 than Apple's device

Estimated read time: 2 min

Sure, 8GB of RAM seems superior to 6GB of RAM, but it’s still a tough contest when it comes to pitting an Android smartphone against an iOS-driven iPhone. The latter has native software specially designed for the device and is therefore optimized to work smoothly without the need for more RAM. That same efficiency also accounts for the smaller battery size, with iPhones requiring less power than their Android rivals to perform similar tasks. A darker display also offers longer battery life, so it comes down to the individual user’s preference here when it comes to brightness. However, it can generally be said that an AMOLED panel is better than an OLED unit and the Galaxy S23 also has the advantage of a higher refresh rate.

Again, on the surface, the iPhone 14 seems inferior to the Galaxy S23 for cameras. Although the MP count may be mostly down, 3x optical zoom is certainly superior to no optical zoom as the Samsung device has a handy 10MP telephoto lens with its 50MP main unit and sensor 12 MP ultra-wide. Suddenly, the Samsung Galaxy S23 triumphs here, at least on paper, as it remains to be seen the quality of production of the images under controlled test. The most questionable part is the conclusion Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy vs A15 Bionic: In a recent play testan unmodified SD 8 Gen 2 (Xiaomi 13 Pro) offered higher average FPS output than the Apple A15 and Apple A16, so the S23 should win this round.

But look deeper into the same comparison and it’s possible to see a typical Android versus iOS contest: Brute force versus elegant efficiency. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 produces 59.4 FPS and also stays cooler than the other chips tested, and it’s measured by managing 10.8 FPS per watt. However, the A15 in the iPhone 14 Plus and the A16 in the iPhone 14 Pro Max produce higher efficiency per watt with 11.3 FPS and 11.8 FPS respectively. It’s quite a subjective task to choose the most superior device among the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Apple’s iPhone 14, but anyone with US$799 to spend on a brand new smartphone will at least be able to choose between probably two of the best phones on the market.
