Google is reportedly testing a ChatGPT rival that uses its own LaMDA conversational chatbot technology and is called “Apprentice Bard”.
Internal documents seen by CNBC indicate that Google is urgently working on a response to Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Google’s “Apprentice Bard” chatbot offers prompt and response functionality similar to ChatGPT, but would improve upon the OpenAI chatbot by offering responses on recent events. OpenAI acknowledges that ChatGPT “has limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021” due to its training data and the fact that it is not connected to the internet.
According to reports, the arrival of ChatGPT has caused Google great concern due to the potential of these tools to change the way people find information online. According to a note consulted by The New York Times Late last year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai disrupted the work of many groups within the company to address the ChatGPT threat.
Apprentice Bard is apparently based on Meena, a Google chatbot unveiled in 2020, and only released internally, but later discontinued.
Google is also testing another Google search page that would allow questions and answers the same way ChatGPT can ask other questions and respond to fancy prompts.
According to CNBC, one design shows the search page with “five different prompts for potential questions placed directly below the main search bar.” This would be in place of the current “I’m lucky” bar. It also showed a small cat logo on the right end of the search bar. A Google spokesperson told CNBC that it continues to test AI technology internally to ensure it is useful and safe “and we look forward to sharing more experiences with the outside soon. “.
