NVIDIA NeRF Introduces VR Scene Creation Tools

Estimated read time: 2 min

NVIDIA updated its NeRF photogrammetry service to include new virtual reality (VR) content creation tools on Tuesday.

The update allows NeRF users to create a VR environment from a series of 2D photos. The service also leverages AI to instantly create virtual scenes and fill in gaps that a user’s 2D source images may have missed.

According to NVIDIA, the upgraded NeRF service allows users to create a VR scene with increased time and cost efficiency.

Once users have converted their source 2D images, they can import them as an immersive environment rendered in a real-time 3D (RT3D) engine.

Users can now enter a NeRF-rendered space through a VR headset, showcasing “use cases across industries.” NVIDIA also envisions NeRF as an appropriate digital twin solution for many verticals, such as property management, retail, and e-commerce.

Learn more about NeRF

In April, NVIDIA unveiled Instant Neural Radiance Fields (Instant NeRF); the company initially pitched the product as a tool for converting 2D images into RT3D digital assets – not just VR content.

Using artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) networks, NVIDIA’s photogrammetry solution accurately simulates a subject’s detail, lighting, and shadow. The sophisticated RT3D conversion tool also uses AI to perform RT3D analysis and enable accessible routing for highly realistic digital twins of people, places and objects.

With additional integration for NVIDIA Omniverse applications, the platform allows developers to quickly create and place their captured assets into an immersive XR environment or other RT3D production pipeline.

According to NVIDIA, the automotive, robotics, manufacturing, architecture, and entertainment industries can all benefit from NeRF. Developers of varying skill levels can use NVIDIA’s service to create RT3D assets, thanks to the solution’s general availability, learning assets, and integration into other applications.

For example, using the company’s NVIDIA DRIVE solution, companies can use Instant NeRF to teach robots and self-driving cars to navigate real-world environments.

NVIDIA also provides a sister smartphone app that developers can use as an easy-to-use tool that speeds up XR content development pipelines.
